Fear and Freedom

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you

have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba!

Father!"”

Romans 8:15

Fear. Every person has some memory of a time in which they were afraid.

For a lot of us it’s right now in this time of chaos in our world. To be honest

it’s hard to not be afraid. The world only provokes fear through reported

news, exaggerated stories, and half truths. So if everything around us tells

us to be afraid, then why does the Bible say that we don’t have to fear?

The Bible says in Romans 8:15 that we did NOT receive a spirit of slavery

to fall back into fear. We are not slaves to fear! Fear cannot control us if we

don’t give it power. This means that no matter what’s going on in the world,

no matter the chaos or craziness, fear cannot control us because God is in

control.

The second half of that verse says that we have been given a “Spirit of

adoption as sons.” Back in Bible times, a son who was adopted was more

“valuable” or “important” than a son who was born into a family. This was

because the child that was adopted was chosen. God chose us despite our

flaws, despite our sin, despite our mistakes. We were chosen by the

Creator of the universe. If that doesn’t give you an amazing sense of peace

and love then I don’t know what does! Our Father chose us and gave us

freedom from fear! Now it’s your turn to choose Him and walk in His

freedom.
